The Great Explorer Challenge.

Welcome back!

We skipped over a few challenges due to computer issues. I am hoping to find some pre-made worlds for The Colonies challenge. I will revisit that one in the future. I also skipped over the Questionable Values and Party Like a Rock Star challenges. They were both on my other computer so I will also swing back around to those. (It can be boring playing the same challenge twice in a row so I will give it a little time).

Onto the current challenge! The Great Explorer Challenge!

The Gist of it:

Your father somehow managed to have a house worth §500,000. He never traveled or left the house at all, was extremely paranoid so had no electrical devices (the man can be listening!), and his wife (your mother) mysteriously died a long time ago leaving you to fend for yourself in a big house that was completely cluttered in junk. Upon your father's death you inherit the house. However, because you received no formal education (that's brainwashing from the man!) you have no marketable skills. You decide to become an explorer and see the world as you spent your entire life cloistered.

Create a YA sim (male or female) with the Great Explorer life time wish. He/She is not allowed to have a job nor read skill books. She must live in a cluttered house worth §500,000. You are not allowed to buy anything unless it shows up as a desire nor may you sell anything original to the house. Your sim earns money by painting, gathering, gardening, and relic hunting. Your sim must marry a foreigner who is also not allowed to work. 2nd and 3rd generation may play as normal.

There are more rules and even a point system. I have outlined the most important parts, though.

Game Play:

This is Salina Helton

Salina's firs trip to Egypt

She is a young adult. Her traits are brave, adventurous, inappropriate, athletic, and frugal.

This is the house. During build is the only time cheats can be used..

The guy on the right wouldn't leave!
I do not normally spend time making my houses or my sims. I enjoy the game play more than build and design. However, there are no houses in any of my towns that are worth §500,000.

Per the rules I made the house a 2 bedroom and 1 bath. However, I felt that a house worth so much would be a bit grand. I probably should have made certain areas more cluttered (there are some parts that can't be seen) I did not want to make it tacky. It ended up being only worth about §300,000. Because the utility bill being so high is such an important aspect of this challenge I used "move objects" to hide a lot of paintings in the stairs in order to get to the §500,000. Because you cannot buy anything for your sim unless he/she asks for it I included an easel as part of the property value. Of course there are no computers or smoke detectors (per game rules).

The original poster does not say anything about having any money so I started Salina out with zero. I had her start painting right away to get enough money for her to start traveling. The utility bill came a couple of days later. It was for §5,000. She definitely did not have that much money but she did have enough to get to Egypt. The great thing about traveling is life at home gets put on hold for a couple of days.

Tomb raiding quickly becomes a lucrative business. It only takes a few trips for her to make several thousand on each relic hunting trip. In addition, she learns the photography skill and soon starts earning §4,000 - §8,000 a trip from pictures.

Part of the challenge is to meet and marry a foreigner. She meets Li on one of her trips to China and they are married within the afternoon. They do literally everything together (on high free will) and frequently have the "My Love" mood boost when around each other. However, on of their trips Salina catches him flirting with another woman. Their marriage continues and they have a baby (Anne) but don't quite have that same loving spark anymore.

The challenge requires them to have a child but does not say how the child fits in so I send her off to boarding school as quickly as possible. Salina continues improving her painting (getting around §800 per), tomb raiding, and bringing in the dough. Before she becomes an elder she has an extra §200,000 in the bank. This is plenty to support the utility bills.

A few days before elder (and before Anne is a ya) Salina finishes the Fully Explore Six Tombs lifetime wish. Even though the challenge says to play through for 3 generations I decided to end it upon completion of her ltw.

The Review:

This challenge was a lot of fun in terms of exploration. Having the child and a husband were entirely unnecessary and I ignored them most of the time. The larger goal of this challenge was that the children would need to support the family also becomes unnecessary because your founder can earn so much money. Once you are done with the life time wish it becomes just a regular old game. When I play challenges I don't particularly want a normal game.

Fun: 3/5. Fun for the first generation but becomes normal after that.
Difficulty: Easy. You can start earning enough money to travel and support the utility bills within a sim week.
Time frame: Medium. Depending on how many generations you want to play this can take a few weekends or more.
Playability: 4/5. Easy to follow the rules but becomes boring part way through.

Overall rating: 4/5
